Traditional cockfighting (“sabong”) to be allowed under Alert Level 2 subject to conditions

SINCE the alert level status of the National Capital Region (NCR) will be de-escalated to Alert Level 2 starting February 1, an official of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said traditional cockfighting or “sabong” will now be allowed under Alert Level 2.

However, DILG spokesperson and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said this will be subject to certain conditions.

Among the conditions are the venue should be filled up to 50 percent capacity only, that the local government unit where the venue is located will not object to the holding of the “sabong,” that all arena entrants should be fully vaccinated, including arena employees.

Malaya said there should be no cash transactions in relation to the betting inside the arena and will only use technology platforms related to betting.

Arena entrants should also wear face masks and everyone should strictly follow minimum public health standards.

Any operator of any cockfighting venue who will fail to comply, enforce or violate the conditions will be ordered to close the venue and appropriate charges will be filed by the polie and the local government.
