Security Screening Officers (SSO) of the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) intercepted suspected illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia from a passenger bound for Cebu via Philippine Airlines Flight No. PR 2863 during routine security screening at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 this week.
The X-ray operator of the OTS at the security screening checkpoint observed suspicious images during the screening. The machine revealed multiple cartridge-like items and objects resembling drug paraphernalia. The matter was immediately brought to the attention of the checkpoint supervisors, who promptly coordinated with Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel on duty, who in turn facilitated coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
The baggage underwent manual inspection by an SSO with PDEA operatives present to assist in the process. A K9 unit was deployed to thoroughly examine the baggage, resulting in a positive indication of the presence of illegal substances. Subsequent testing using a Rahman detection machine likewise confirmed the presence of marijuana content.
The inspection resulted in the interception of 13 pieces of liquid marijuana and three pieces of drug paraphernalia. The passenger was immediately informed of the findings and was turned over to the custody of PDEA operatives for proper documentation and legal disposition.
OTS underscored its continued commitment to enforcing strict security protocols across all airports and to maintain close coordination with law enforcement agencies in preventing the entry of prohibited and unlawful items within airport facilities.
OTS Administrator Undersecretary Gilberto DC Cruz emphasized the agency’s continued dedication and close coordination with partner agencies in intercepting prohibited items during security screening operations.
“Our Security Screening Officers remain alert in identifying prohibited items that may pose a threat to aviation security. Through our coordination with law enforcement agencies, we ensure that any suspicious findings are properly turned over for appropriate action,” Cruz said.
