AN in-depth look at one of Hollywood’s most intriguing “what could have been” stories.
Uncork’d Entertainment has secured U.S. and Canadian distribution rights for George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, an investigative documentary that delves into the untold story of the legendary director’s unmade adaptation of the iconic video game. The highly anticipated film, directed by Brandon Salisbury, will debut on Digital and On Demand on January 7, 2025, as reported by Bloody Disgusting.
In 1998, Constantin Film aimed to bring Capcom’s beloved Resident Evil video game series to the big screen and enlisted George A. Romero, the visionary behind the modern zombie genre, to adapt it. Despite the seemingly perfect collaboration, Romero’s vision never made it past the early stages of development.
Salisbury’s documentary unearths the fascinating behind-the-scenes saga of the project, blending archival footage, previously undisclosed documents, and interviews with key players in the industry.
“George Romero gave birth to modern horror, the modern zombie, and ultimately Resident Evil,” Salisbury explains. “I am honored to bring fans the untold story of his most important unmade project, celebrating the legacy of the man who inspired me to pursue filmmaking. I hope fans enjoy this ultimate experience in survival horror.”
The documentary promises a stylized and immersive approach, drawing comparisons to films like Jodorowsky’s Dune. By revisiting the people and creative vision behind the unproduced adaptation, it offers a new perspective on what could have been a defining chapter in both Romero’s career and the Resident Evil franchise.
“Uncork’d is honored to bring George A. Romero’s Resident Evil to fans who have long awaited the untold story behind this legendary, unmade project,” says Keith Leopard, President of Uncork’d Entertainment. “This documentary pays homage to Romero’s incredible vision and the power of storytelling that transcends what could have been. We’re excited for audiences to finally experience the mystery and legacy of his work in a whole new way.”
With the release of George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, fans of both Romero and Resident Evil can finally dive into the untold tale of a collaboration that could have redefined survival horror on the silver screen.
