THE final days of 2024 are expected to be rainy in several parts of the Philippines, according to the state weather bureau, PAGASA.
In its 5 a.m. advisory on Sunday, PAGASA attributed the rains to the shear line—a convergence of warm and cold winds—and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.
Rainfall Forecast
Moderate to heavy rainfall (50 to 100 mm) is forecast for the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, and Palawan on Monday, December 30. By Tuesday, December 31, the Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur will also experience similar weather conditions.
PAGASA cautioned that these rains may cause localized flooding, particularly in urban, low-lying, and coastal areas, while landslides are possible in highly susceptible regions.
General Weather Conditions
The agency also noted that cloudy skies, scattered rains, and thunderstorms are likely nationwide on Sunday due to the combined effects of the shear line, ITCZ, and the northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan.”
Residents in affected areas are advised to remain alert for potential flooding and landslides and to monitor updates from PAGASA for any changes in weather conditions.
