A PROPOSED measure was filed at the House of Representatives seeking to remove the income tax imposed on honoraria of teachers doing poll duties during national or local elections in the country.
House Bill 10661 emphasizes on the important role played by teachers acting as members of the Electoral Board during elections
It said teachers also help protect each ballot and ensure an orderly and clean election, even if it meant putting their lives on the line.
Because of the unique and exemplary services and sacrifices performed by teachers, the proposed bill emphasizes the need to provide teachers with just and appropriate compensation, which should also be exempt from income tax.
Among those proposed to be income tax-exempt are the “per diem,” honoraria and allowances provided to chairpersons and members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs), special BEIs, Board of Election Tellers (BETS) and special BETS.
Bill proponents are currently pushing to have the proposed bill approved and become certified as law before the May 9, 2022 national and local elections.
