PCG deploys 17,000 personnel for expected “Semana Santa” travel surge

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will deploy around 17,000 maritime safety and security personnel nationwide for its “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa 2026,” as authorities brace for a surge in sea travel during the Lenten break.

The deployment, which will run from March 28 to April 5, covers major ports, passenger vessels, and nautical highways across the country, in anticipation of increased inter-island travel during the Holy Week.

PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan has ordered all Coast Guard districts, stations, and substations to heighten alert levels and intensify monitoring operations, particularly in high-traffic maritime routes.

The move aligns with directives from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), led by Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez, to tighten maritime safety measures during the peak travel period.

Under the plan, authorities will enforce stricter vessel inspections, including rigorous pre-departure checks to prevent overloading and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Coast Guard personnel will also assist in maintaining orderly operations in ports and onboard passenger vessels.

The PCG said round-the-clock monitoring will be conducted on key sea routes, particularly along the country’s western and eastern seaboards. Security operations will be reinforced through K9 units and inspection teams tasked with screening passengers and cargo to deter illegal activities and maritime crimes.

Search and rescue units, along with medical teams and deployable response groups, will be placed on standby to respond to emergencies at sea.

Beyond ports and vessels, the Coast Guard will coordinate with local government units (LGUs) and lifeguards to strengthen safety measures in beach destinations and other maritime recreational areas, which are expected to draw large crowds during the holidays. Coastal and seaborne patrols will also be intensified to ensure a visible security presence.

The PCG also reminded passengers to avoid bringing prohibited items such as flammable liquids, hazardous chemicals, and fireworks, warning that these could pose risks and cause delays during travel.

The operation will be carried out in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Philippine Ports Authority, Maritime Industry Authority, and LGUs.

As millions of Filipinos travel this Holy Week, the PCG stands ready to keep our seas safe,” Gavan said, urging the public to follow safety guidelines and coordinate with authorities to ensure smooth and secure journeys.
