NBI arrests 6 suspects for allegedly selling Bangsamoro Parliament seats for P15 Million

MANILA, PHILIPPINES—The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced on Friday the arrest of six individuals for allegedly offering parliamentary seats in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in exchange for P15 million.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago said the arrests stemmed from a complaint filed on December 29, 2024. The suspects, identified as Diahn Sanchez Dagohoy, Bolskiah Balt Datadacula, Alejandro Barcena Lorino Jr., Ronald Joseph Catunao, Leomer Abon, and Tita Natividad, were apprehended in an entrapment operation conducted at a hotel in Manila on Thursday.

Charges Filed:
The suspects face charges of estafa and violation of Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code, which pertains to usurpation of authority or official functions.

The Scheme:
According to the NBI, a certain “Diane” initially offered a parliamentary position in BARMM for P8 million. The amount was later raised to P15 million when the suspect proposed securing two seats, allegedly facilitated by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.

The suspects reportedly assured the victims that, upon approval of the appointments, they would immediately take their oaths on January 3, 2025.

False Claims of Authority:
Director Santiago revealed that the suspects introduced themselves as members of the Office of the President to gain credibility. However, an NBI investigation confirmed that none of them were affiliated with any government agency.

Legal Action:
The NBI emphasized its commitment to pursuing justice against individuals exploiting government positions for personal gain. Authorities reminded the public to remain vigilant against similar fraudulent schemes.

The suspects are now in NBI custody and awaiting further legal proceedings.
