MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines scored three major wins at the World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final in Bahrain last weekend, extending its streak as the World’s Leading Dive Destination to seven years and securing top honors for Manila and Boracay.
Manila clinched its third straight World’s Leading City Destination title, beating global heavyweights such as London, New York, Dubai, and Cape Town. Boracay, meanwhile, was again named World’s Leading Luxury Island Destination, edging out contenders from the Caribbean and Europe.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said the recognitions reflect growing global confidence in Philippine tourism, citing the support of industry workers and ongoing improvements in infrastructure and connectivity.
The dive destination award places the Philippines ahead of 12 competitors, including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Fiji, and the Galapagos Islands. The WTA also cited the country’s marine biodiversity and community-driven conservation efforts.
Boracay’s repeat win highlights the island’s upscale visitor experience and sustainability programs, while Manila’s victory underscores the capital’s expanding cultural scene, food landscape, and readiness for major events.
The latest accolades follow the Philippines’ strong showing at the WTA Asia & Oceania awards in Hong Kong in October, where it earned multiple regional distinctions, including Asia’s Leading Dive, Beach, and Island Destination.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards are widely regarded as among the most prestigious honors in global tourism.
