THE period for the renewal of license, registration and certificate and permit to carry firearms outside of the home have been extended.
The government has set a fixed validity period for license to own and possess firearms, registration and permit to carry firearms outside of residence or place of business.
Under Republic Act 11766 signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte last May 6, 2022, the permit to carry firearms outside of domicile or place of business shall now be valid for two years from the previous one-year validity.
In terms of the license to own and possess a firearm of whatever classification, it can now be renewed every five or 10 years at the option of the licensee, from the previous two years, while registration of firearms can be renewed every five or 10 years from the former four years.
If a licensee fails to renew the firearm registration before its expiration date, the firearm license can be revoked and the firearm will be confiscated after observing due process.
Under the law, failure to renew firearm license and registration within the fixed validity period on two instances would be enough reason for perpetual disqualification of the firearm holder to apply for any firearm license in the future.
The application for firearm license and registration will be submitted to the Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO) of the Philippine National Police within six months before date of expiration.
